What happens during an ADHD Assessment

Step 1. Before your ADHD assessment

After you book a private ADHD assessment, we’ll send you a set of pre-assessment forms. These help your clinician understand your experience before you meet. We know forms can feel overwhelming, especially if you’re living with ADHD.

If you need to, you can Book a Chat and we’ll help you work through them by email or phone. We will give you at least 1 week from point of booking to your appointment to complete your forms.

Step 2. During the assessment appointment

Your assessment is a structured, in-depth clinical interview with a qualified and experienced clinician. It follows NICE aligned diagnostic guidance and recognised clinical frameworks; it is not a tick-box exercise.

You’ll have the time and space to talk through your experiences (in your own words), ask questions, and feel properly heard.

Appointments typically last around 3 hours, allowing for a thorough, careful assessment and, where possible, discussion of your outcome on the same day.

Step 3. Receiving your diagnostic report

You’ll receive two clear, easy to understand reports. Firstly, a detailed report brings all of your findings together in one place to help you fully understand your diagnosis. Secondly, you’ll get a shorter, summary report. This is designed for sharing with your GP. You always stay in control of who you share your detailed report with and when.

What your report contains:

  • A summary of your assessment (including how the diagnostic criteria was evidenced).
  • Your ADHD profile and the impacts.
  • Clear clinical conclusions.
  • Where appropriate, it may also include practical recommendations and suggested next steps.

Your detailed report is yours to use, for your own records, to support workplace or education adjustments, or to share with your GP or other professionals if helpful.

Diagnostic Criteria

We assess ADHD using recognised, NICE- aligned diagnostic criteria, considering both current difficulties and lifelong patterns. Your clinician will explore how symptoms show up across different areas of your life and the impact they have on day-to-day functioning, rather than relying on scores alone. Any diagnosis is based on careful clinical judgement, not a single test.

Step 4. After the assessment

We’ll follow up shortly after your appointment to check how you’re doing, talk through your diagnosis and your next steps. There’s no pressure and no rush, we’ll support what’s right for you.

If you choose to we have a range of medicated and non-medicated treatment packages and support options offer by Sort and other recommended not-for-profit partners.
